"Law and order is a state subject. But I understand the crime rate in West Bengal is going down and the sensitive Maoist issue has been dealt with firmly by the state government," Singh said here.
West Bengal PCC chief Pradip Bhattachraya had recently said incidents of rape and other crimes against women in the state were on the rise and suggested that the government call an all party meeting on the issue.
Singh, who earlier met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat, said border security, prison reforms and Maoist issues were discussed during the meeting.
"The state government is working well to combat the Maoist menace and the issue is also in the priority list of the Centre. The Centre is always ready to cooperate with the state on the issue with para-military forces", Singh said.
The Union minister said he had discussed with Banerjee bringing in nation-wide reforms in prison administration by introducing a single benchmark.
He, however, appreciated the condition of prisons called correctional homes in West Bengal and said their condition was 'much better than many other states'.
