The Jammu and Kashmir government today appointed a Liaison Officer to look into incidents of alleged harassment of students from Jammu and Kashmir, studying in other states.
Principal Resident Commissioner, J&K-New Delhi has been appointed as the Liaison Officer (LO) to intimate any incident of alleged harassment of students from Jammu and Kashmir studying in other states, an official spokesman said here.
The LO will co-ordinate with all agencies concerned and state government departments with a view to ensure safety and security of the state's students, he said adding that helpline numbers 011-24611108 and 011-24611210 will be available on 24x7 basis in the office of the LO for reporting any incident of students' harassment.
This step has been taken in view of reports of beating of Kashmiri students after ragging, in a college in Bangalore some time back.
Minister of state for Home Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo also said, "It has been a cause of concern for the parents of students studying in other parts of the country since long."
Kichloo urged parents to immediately contact the LO through the helplines in case of any emergency.
Pointing to the Bangalore incident where some boys from Kashmir were beaten up, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said at a function here, "Recently in Bangalore, the fight took place because they (Kashmiri boys) were making fun of children from Bihar. If they would not have been doing that, probably the incident would not have taken place."
"Some of our people here tried to give it a different colour -- these children were from Kashmir, they were racially profiled and wherever they go they are beaten. To say that these children were from Kashmir and that is why they were beaten, is totally wrong," Omar added.
