"We appeal to the Principal Secretary, Health and Medical Education Department, Manoj Dwivedi, to inquire into the circumstances which led to the infant's death," district vice-president of PDP, Vikram Singh, told reporters here.

Jammu and Kashmir government yesterday ordered probe into the death of the baby girl, who passed away on December 12 while undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College.

He said the alleged monopolising of all bronchoscopes at the hospital by Principal of Government Medical College, Dr Aniece Choudhary, which led to the girl's death as a minor surgery on her could not be carried out, should also be probed.

The one and half year old girl was admitted on December 8 in the hospital after a corn seed got stuck in her throat.

She died at the hospital on December 12 triggering protests by her relatives, who alleged that negligence of doctors was responsible for her death.

Singh demanded stern action against Choudhary as a seed stuck in the throat, blocking the windpipe, should not have caused her death if the doctors had handled the case properly.

He claimed that the child lost her life because Choudhary kept bronchoscopes, the machines required for carrying out the minor surgical procedure, in his own custody.

No other doctor is allowed to use these machines by Choudhary who has made these costly machines his private property, Singh alleged.

The health and medical education department should conduct an inquiry as to whether doctors other than Choudhary could have conducted the required surgery and saved the life of the innocent child from the remote area of Doda, he said.
