In an apparently first militancy-linked killing in the fasting month of Ramazan in Kashmir Valley, ultras today slit open the throat of a police head constable in Handwara area in Kupwara district.

Sonaullah Zargar, posted at the district police lines in Srinagar, was found dead with his throat slit open by a sharp-edged weapon in the forest area in his native village Vilgam, 90-km from here, police said.

The policeman had gone along with his wife and son to collect firewood in the forest area and the trio had fanned out in separate directions.

But when Zargar failed to return to a pre-determined place, his family started a search for him and found his body some distance away.

Police said prima facie it appeared the policeman was intercepted and killed by militants.
