A section of students and professors of Jawaharlal Nehru University today organised a citizens' march, calling for peace and secularism in the wake of recent communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar.

More than 200 people participated in the march organised by JNU's students and teachers at Mandi House to criticise those involved in inciting communal violence in west UP district.

"The clashes were orchestrated and politically motivated. For electoral gains, political parties have been resorting to communal polarisation which is detrimental to society," said Sandeep Saurav, General Secretary, JNU Students' Union.

Saurav said a fact-finding team of JNUSU had recently visited the riot-hit areas in Muzaffarnagar to probe the sequence of events.

"The report of the fact-finding team has been circulated among university students. We will soon put it on the website," he said.

The communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas claimed 49 lives and displaced over 40,000 people.
