Joint patrolling by the Uttar Pradesh Police and SSB teams has been intensified as a high-security alert has been sounded by national security agencies at the border areas ahead of Independence Day.

A Sashtra Seema Bal official in Mahrajganj district said the police and SSB sleuths had started patrol on various routes to the Nepal border at Sonauli chekpost, including some which were not well known but being used by local residents and smugglers.

"After getting feedback from security agencies that terrorists could sneak into Indian territory from the Nepal border, we activated all border outposts at the Indo-Nepal border in the district and started joint patrol," SSB said.

The security exercise, which began yesterday, would continue till August 19, Commandant SSB Shiv Dayal said.

Under the operation, security arrangements have been beefed up along the border areas to check infiltration bid from across the border, he said.

The SSB said a dog squad had been deputed at the border with Nepal as well to smell explosives and arms and ammunition.

"We have several pairs of trained dogs which can identify both narcotics and explosives. All these dogs have been deputed on security patrol at the border Sonauli these days," Dayal said.
