'Bend It Like Beckham' star Jonathan Rhys Meyers has joined the starcast of the Roland Emmerich-directed gay-rights drama 'Stonewall'.

Jeremy Irvine stars in the lead role, which is set during the riots of June 1969, said the Hollywood Reporter.

The film tells the story of the riots of June 1969 after police raided the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village.

Ron Perlman and Joey King also star in the movie, which will focus on one man's political awakening sparked by the riots, which became an important event for the gay rights movement.

The script is by Jon Robin Baitz and revolves around Danny Winters who flees to New York and becomes a regular at the Stonewall Inn.

At the bar, Danny meets the suave Trevor (Rhys Meyers) before catching the eye of Ed Murphy (Perlman), Stonewall's repulsive manager. Things spiral out of control when the police raid Stonewall, sparking a riot.
