Joshi keeps main draw hopes alive

Joshi, who lost his second qualifying round to Aseem Arora of Haryana earlier in the day, registered three back-to-back wins against Abhijit More of Karnataka, Gurdit Singh of Delhi and Vishal Gehani of Maharashtra to remain one win away from making it to the main draw that kicks off tomorrow.

Joshi, of Bharat Petroleum, recovered from 1-3 deficit against Arora to force the decider before he lost a tight final frame.

Sandeep Gulati of Delhi, Hemanth Kumar of Railways, Shivam Arora of Bihar, India sub junior number three Ishpreet Singh Chadha of Maharashtra and Viren Sharma of Madhya Pradesh squeaked into the main draw from the double elimination round.

 

The others to qualify for the main draw were Rovin D'Souza, Chandresh Shah and Arun Agrawal of Maharashtra, R Santosh of Karnataka, Varun Kumar of Tamil Nadu and K Venkatesh of Railways, following wins in the third and final qualifying round.

Forty-eight players from the qualifying round will join the 16 direct entries that will make up a main draw of 64.

The 16 players, who have received direct entries are, defending champion Shahbaz Khan of PSPB, last year's runner-up Kamal Chawla of Bhopal, I H Manudev and Balaji Reddy of Karnataka, Manan Chandra and Rishab Pandya (PSPB), Ashok Shandilya, Siddharth Parikh, Pushpinder Singh, Manish Jain, Niraj Kumar and Faisal Khan of Railways, A Arvind and Lucky Vatnani of AP, Laxman Rawat of Delhi and Lalrina Ranthlei of Mizoram.

The main draw will have 16 groups of four players each and the top two from each group in the round robin will qualify for the knock-out round of 32.
