"BJP has set new standards and new benchmarks on internal democracy by this ritual of sacrifice even before the Gujarat Chief Minister can condescend to attend national executive of his party. Whether this is democratic or dictatorial is something that BJP needs to introspect," party spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters here.

He was responding to questions on Joshi's resignation ahead of the national executive meeting of BJP amid speculation that Modi had set it as a condition for attending the meet.

The Congress spokesperson said that the event should be "an eye-opener for the people that how dictatorial those, who profess to be democratic, are even in their internal matters".

"The political party, which used to accuse others of dictatorship should introspect over it and decide if this is the difference on the basis of which they used to call themselves a party with a difference," Tewari said.

He also dismissed BJP President Nitin Gadkari's remark in Mumbai that Congress chief's criterion for selecting its candidate to occupy Rashtrapati Bhavan appears to be "loyalty to the dynasty, and not loyalty to the Constitution."

"BJP should first come out of its internal dissension and the ritutal of sacrifices before raising fingers at anybody else for anything," Tewari said.
