Journalist shot dead in Jharkhand

A journalist was shot dead by unidentified people at Dewaria in this district, police said here today.

Akhilesh Pratap Singh (35), who worked for a news channel, was gunned down near panchayat secretariat of the village last night, a police official said, adding that a bandh was observed in Chatra town in protest against the killing.

Chief Minister Raghubar Das condemned the incident and asked Director General of Police D K Pandey to arrest the culprits at the earliest.

A delegation of local journalists met Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar and Superintendent of Police Anjani Kumar Jha and demanded adequate compensation to the family of the victim.

The Jharkhand Journalist Association met Home

Secretary N N Pandey and submitted a memorandum in Ranchi, a copy of which was submitted to the Office of the Chief Secretary.

The Home Secretary sought a report from the DGP who said "vital clues have been found in the murder," an Association release said.

The DGP said CID sleuths were investigating the matter and culprits would be arrested soon. Officials of the Forensic Science Laboratory were also doing their job, the release said.
