Journalists protest killing of colleague scribe

Journalists here today protested killing of a local scribe and demanded compensation and a government job to his family members besides the arrest of one of the accused who is absconding.

The accused former village headman Harshu Miyan, whose vehicle had knocked down the motorcycle which victim scribe Navin Nishchal was riding along with a fellow villager, was today produced before a court which remanded him to 14 days in judicial custody.

The deceased scribe Navin Nishchal worked for a Hindi daily.

Vijay Singh, who was with Nishchal was his fellow villager and both were crushed to death near Nahsi village.

The demands were raised at a meeting held at Ara Press Club, situated in the district headquarters of Bhojpur, to mourn the death of Navin Nishchal, who was crushed to death by an SUV in a remote part of the district on Sunday night.

 

At the meeting, president of the Ara Press Club Tanveer Shabbu said "the state government should provide Rs 25 lakh ex gratia and government job to one of the bereaved family members. The police should also confiscate the property of those named as accused in the case".

Bhojpur Superintendent of Police Avakash Kumar said efforts were on to nab Harshu Miyan's son Dablu, whom the eyewitnesses have accused of being inside the vehicle along with his father when the Scorpio car crushed the two persons under its wheels.

The vehicle was set on fire by angry onlookers.

Meanwhile, former Ara MP and leader of the ruling JD(U) in the state Meena Singh today visited Nishchal's residence and consoled her family members.

She said "there has been a deterioration in law and order situation in the state because of laxity of police and administration. I will speak to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar about the issue".

A report from Purnea district said journalists there met the District Magistrate and submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister demanding "speedy trial and death penalty" for the accused.

A legislation ensuring protection to journalists was also demanded by the protesting scribes in both districts.
