JSW Dharamtar Port gets nod to expand jetty facility in Raigad

Press Trust of India New Delhi
JSW Dharamtar Port has received green clearance for expansion of its jetty facility with an investment of Rs 1,550 crore at Dolvi village in Raigad district of Maharashtra.

JSW Dharamtar Port Ltd (JSWDPL) is a special purpose vehicle created under the aegis of JSW Infrastructure Ltd to handle the cargo of the JSW Steel, Dolvi works.

JSWDPL has proposed to expand the existing 331.5 metre jetty at village Dolvi in Raigad to 1,750 metre, which will increase the cargo handling from the current 9.69 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 33.95 MTPA.

"Based on the recommendations of the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC), the Environment Ministry has given environment and coastal regulation zone (CRZ) clearance to the expansion project in Raigad by JSW Dharamtar Port," a senior official said.

The green clearance has been given subject to specific and general conditions, the official added.

The expansion of the cargo facility is expected in three phases. The project cost is estimated at Rs 1,550 crore.

Among specific conditions to be complied, the official said that since the project falls in CRZ-I and CRZ-III, JSWDPL has been asked not to cut mangroves during the project implementation and care should be taken to conserve them.

"Also, in view of the likely impact of the proposed construction methodology, National Center for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM) may carry out a study for suggesting measures for mangrove protection," he said.

The company has been asked not to dispose off the dredged materials into sea, instead it reuse for reclamation and shore enrichment based on its characteristics, as committed, he said adding, it also has been asked to submit a six-monthly monitoring report.

Ships and barges should not be allowed to release any oily bilge waste or ballast water in the sea. Any effluents from the jetty which have leachable characteristics should be segregated and recycled/disposed as per the existing guidelines, the official added.
