The tense situation in the Jadavpur University has eased as a large section of the students have started attending classes, though without recording their attendance officially.
The students, however, refused to back out from their one-month-old demand for the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Abhijit Chakrabarti who had called in the police to break up a gherao in the campus on the night of September 17.
"We will attend classes, but will not give attendance and will boycott all administrative procedures of the university till the VC resigns," the students said.

The VC on his part also noted the improvement in the situation, telling PTI, "The situation has improved but let things get regularised completely. It is inching back to normalcy slowly. I am hopeful that everything will be normal soon."
He said the students had submitted a charter of demands to Registrar Pradip Ghosh.
"We are on the job to address their grievances," Chakrabarti said.
During the day, the students brought out a rally from College street. Holding posters they raised slogans against the VC.
