"We will initiate a judicial inquiry into the Tehatta incident. What I gathered is that the SDPO fired in self-defence. Something must have happened. Why did the OC run away? We need to investigate it," Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat here.
She said the SDPO, SDO and OC of the Tehatta police station had been removed for an impartial probe into the incident.
Stating that the law would take its own course, Banerjee said, "We are transparent."
The SDPO had fired after he was chased by demonstrators who had set up a road blockade at PWD More on the Krishnagar-Karimpur highway at Tehatta in protest against the refusal of permission by the police to allow a Jagaddhari puja at their chosen venue.
The agitators had also set afire police vehicles and thrown brickbats at policemen.
