The services of lawyers will be made available in the jail regularly and they will continue to monitor the cases of the prisoners and provide them justice quickly, Justice Kumar said at a function after inaugurating a Free Legal Aid Clinic at district jail, Anantnag, yesterday.
The aim of such clinics is to provide free legal services to those who cannot afford legal expenses, Justice Kumar, who is also the Patron-in-Chief of J&K State Legal Services Authority, said.
He said 134 such clinics have been opened at various places in the state and many more are in the offing.
He asked the lawyers to extend helping hands to the needy with missionary approach, saying the service to humanity is the service to God. He expressed hope that the prisoners will take full advantage of the services.
He asked the prisoners, most of whom were booked under narcotics crimes, to reform themselves and stressed for their rehabilitation.
Later, the Chief Justice inaugurated a Mobile Lok Adalat at village Akad here. The mobile van is the first such attempt in the Kashmir province.
The Chief Justice settled 24 cases related to motor accident claims and matrimonial disputes on the spot and distributed nearly Rs 1 crore as compensation among the beneficiaries.
The main aim of Mobile Adalats and clinics is that it reduces the multiplicity of litigation and controls the coaching of witness, he said.
Justice Kumar also announced a Free Legal Aid Clinic at Akad village when some people demanded the same. He announced the clinic will be set up start within a month.
