An elderly man was today trampled to death by an elephant in Odisha's Dhenkanal district, police said.

The incident took place on a road between Kusumjodi and Salapada under Tumusingha forest range in Kamakshyanagar police station jurisdiction.

The deceased has been identified as Gandharb Moharana (52) of Jakka village.

Gandharb, a carpenter by profession, was on his way to neighbouring Kusumjodi village in the morning when he encountered the lone tusker on the village road.

The forest department has extended Rs 40,000 aid to his family, forest ranger B B Mishra said.

Villagers have demanded ex-gratia for the kin of the victim and employment for one family member. They also demanded action on forest officials for failing to drive out the wild tusker from the village, which has killed a number of people in the past few months.
