A 35-year-old man has been trampled to death by an elephant at a village near Pilloor dam, some 50 km from here, police said.

Hearing that a herd of elephants had entered a banana farm, some villagers of Athikadavu, including one Rangasamy, went there to drive them into the jungles around midnight last night, police said today.

After their successful attempt, all of them returned except Rangasamy.

On a search, they found his body with the head crushed and alerted forest officials.

Senior police officials from Pilloor Dam station retrieved the body this morning and sent it for post-mortem at the Mettupapalaym government hospital.
