Junior swimmers Vedant, Maana win gold medals

Vedant Singh of Mumbai was one of two junior (under 18) swimmers to win the gold medal in the 8th Asian Age Group Aquatic Championship in Bangkok, Thailand.

Singh, a product of Glenmark Aquatic Foundation who trains at its high performance centre in Dharavi here, clinched the gold in the 800m freestyle in the boys 10-14 age group, clocking 8:58:76, to finish ahead of his Japanese and Ukrainian rivals, according a media release from the Foundation.

Maana Patel won the gold in the 50M backstroke for girls in the 15-17 age group, clocking 29.30.

Also clinching individual gold medals in the meet for over 18 participants were seasoned senior swimmer and Guangzhou Asian Games bronze medalist Virdhawal Khade (50M freestyle, 22.86) and Sajan Prakash (800M freestyle, 8:13:41).
 

Khade and Prakash also enabled the Indian 4x100M freestyle quartet (completed by Anshul Kothari and Neil Contractor) to clinch the gold in 3:37.50.

Indian swimmers also won 4 silver and 11 bronze medals in the meet in which more than 25 countries took part.
