The government would give loan and subsidies to the cooperative societies keen on meeting such needs of the poor, Puttaswamy told reporters here.

The water supply, food and health cooperatives would be owned and controlled by the communities, he said.

A meeting has been convened next week to discuss and give shape to the innovative idea, Puttaswamy said. He would discuss with Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on providing funds in the next budget to implement it.

Puttaswamy also announced observation of 59th 'All India Cooperative Week' from November 14 to November 20 across the state. The event will be held in Bangalore, Mysore, Gadag, Hospet, Shimoga and Belgaum.

Karnataka State Co-operative Federation Chairman G T Devegowda said the state cooperative sector wanted the Centre to withdraw the 33 per cent direct tax levied on the cooperative institutions' profits.

"This will spell disaster for the cooperative institutes and banks which pass on the profit to the members without any commercial motive in the business," he said.
