Kannada and Culture Department would organise the annual event and the state government would provide fiscal help, Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar told reporters here today.

Shettar said it would be a fitting tribute to classical vocalists like Bhimsen Joshi, Gangubai Hangal, Pandit Basavaraj Rajaguru and many others, if the festival is held at Dharwad as they were all natives of the district.

The government would soon start work on the banks of Bennihalla and Doni Nadi river to check spate and avoid human tragedy, Shettar said. A couple of years ago, the two overflowing rivers had caused havoc, marooning villages.

The chief minister said the recommendations of the Pramashivaiah Committee on tackling floods in the rivers would be soon implemented to help people of Dharwad and Bijapur districts. "The report has already been submitted to the government and has been accepted in the cabinet meeting," he said.
