Kalyan Jewellers to spend Rs 20cr to build 2000 homes for poor

Kalyan Jewellers today said it will build 2,000 homes for low income and marginalised families in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in the next two years.

An agreement to this regard has been signed with Habitat for Humanity India, a non-profit organisation that aims to eliminate poverty by providing shelter to poor families, the company said in a statement.

Kalyan Jewellers has committed Rs 20 crore towards the initiative as part of its endeavour to support the communities with which it operates its business, it said.

Kalyan is the first Indian corporate to support Habitat for Humanity India's new initiative 'Impact 50-50', which aims to work in 100 districts across the country for providing shelter and sanitation for people at the bottom of the society's pyramid.
 

Kalyan Jewellers and Habitat will build 750 homes in phase one, followed by 1,250 homes in the second phase.

Over 2,000 families and 10,000 individuals will be positively impacted, the release added.

The initiative is aligned with the Centre'sschemes of 'Housing for All' and 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan', aimed to build adequate shelters and make India open defecation free.

Kalyan Jewellers Chairman and Managing Director T S Kalyanaraman said, "We aim to complete the 2,000 homes over the next 2 years.

"This is the beginning and we are committed to scaling up our efforts to build collective capacity in areas like housing and sanitation that will complement the government's development initiatives."

Habitat for Humanity India Managing Director Rajan Samuel, described the partnership as a 'historic step'.

"We are hopeful that under our 'Impact 50-50' approach, we will encourage other corporates to invest in livelihood, health and education, thereby ensuring the sustainable impact of our shelter programme," he said.
