The Registrar of Kalyani Government Engineering College and nine students were today sentenced to 20 days imprisonment by a local court here.

A fine of Rs 2,000 each was also imposed on the ten persons by Sandip Kumar Kundu, ACJM-II of the Kalyani Court in connection with a complaint lodged against them by the police for allegedly attacking the Kalyani police station in March, 2014.

All nine students and Registrar Bishnupada Biswas were later on release on personal bail bonds of Rs 1,500 each by the court, their lawyer Sarit Mukherjee said.

The lawyer said a clash had broken out in the college campus between a group of outsiders and the students at night in March, 2014.

"The police was informed, but their failed to reach the campus on time. A section of students then went to the police station and complained against police inaction against those creating trouble. The Registrar had also accompanied the students," said Mukherjee adding, the police had alleged that a section of students became unruly and pelted stones at the police station.

"The case was going on for so long and we will move the upper court by this month for justice," the lawyer said.
