Kamala Surayya award for Rubina Niwaz

The Kamala Surayya award for young women Malayalam short story writers, instituted by the Thiruvanathapuram-based Kerala Kalakendram, has gone to Rubina Niwaz for her story 'Breaking News'.

The stories published first by a woman writer in the last three years were considered for the award, consisting of Rs 10,000, plaque and certificate, a Kalakendram press release here said.

Special awards for young short story writers would be given for E K Shahina, Kusumam R Punnapra, V K Deepa and Indira Thuravoor.

The award jury, comprising noted writers, George Onakkoor, B Sandhya and S Mahadevan Thampy, selected the awardees from among 68 entries. The awards would be presented at a function here on May 31, the fourth death anniversary of celebrated writer Kamala Surayya.
