New state-of-art maintenance facility for ships will be set up in Kandla (Gujarat), Guwahati (Assam) and Andaman soon, Union Transport and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari, said here today.

"Our ships were going distant places across the seven seas and therefore we have decided to provide maintenance facility to the ships at reasonable cost and this new facility will come up in Kandala, Guwahati, and Andaman," Gadkari told PTI today on the sidelines of his visit to Air India MRO in city.

He further said, "We have realised that our ships were sailing to Malaysia for repairs which costs several times less than the sailing cost".

Citing an example, Gadkari said the maintenance bill was around Rs four lakh and sailing cost was estimated to be Rs 50 lakh.

The Cochin Ship Yard was in the process of manufacturing a water cum road bus which will travel on road and can sail on water which will be a safe mode of transport, Gadkari added.
