Karate training for tribal girls in TN schools

In a bid to encourage girl students from tribal areas to tackle physical threats against them, Tamil Nadu government would train them in the martial art of karate in their schools.

Initially the training would be imparted to tribal girls in five districts --Nilgiris, Namakkal, Salem,Tiruvannamalai and Dharmapuri, where the tribal population is higher, School Education Minister K C Veeramani said in the Assembly.

The training would start with a total of 4,782 girls studying in 482 schools at a cost of Rs 14 lakh during 2014-15, he said.

In another announcement, he said the government has allocated Rs 20 lakh for procuring sports equipment for government schools in the state during 2014-15.
 

The government would also fill 3,459 teaching vacancies, 75 non-teaching-oriented vacancies and 340 non-teaching vacancies across the state during the same period, he said.
