The Karnataka Cabinet today decided to form a Special Investigation Team under anti-corruption ombudsman Lokayukta to look into illegal mining in the state.
"We have decided to set up SIT under Lokayukta to look into illegal mining in Karnataka," Minister for Parliamentary Affairs T B Jayachandra told reporters after a Cabinet meeting.
Jayachandra said the SIT with 196 personnel will submit its report in two years.

There have been suggestions from various quarters to set up SIT to look into illegal mining and check loss to the state exchequer, Jayachandra said.
It was being argued that the government had taken action in isolated cases, he added.
Jayachandra said the Cabinet approved sanctioning 283 acres of land for the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology at Sulibele village near Hoskote.
