Ashoka, also the Home Minister, will meet Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in Guwahati tomorrow, sources close to him told PTI here today.

The Minister will also visit Manipur and meet people who left the city in thousands during last week following rumours that the community would be attacked in the wake of the violence in Assam.

Ashoka would be accompanied by Karnataka DGP L R Pachau, himself hailing from Mizoram, in the confidence building visit during which he would brief leaders about measures taken by the state government for the protection of northeast people. A booklet outlining the measures had also been prepared.

About 3.5 lakh people from North Eastern states are living in parts of Karnataka and about 30,000 of them returned to their native places since August 15 in the wake of the threatening SMS. Similar exodus was also reported from neighbouring Tamil Nadu and other parts of the country.

Bangalore police have arrested 20 persons in connection with the rumour mongering, five of them for sending threatening SMS.

Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar had written to his Assam counterpart recently that he would depute the Home Minister to visit North Eastern states.

Meanwhile, Bangalore Divisional Railway Manager Anil Kumar Agarwal told PTI that nearly 300 North East people returned to Bangalore in six special trains which returned from Guwahati in the last three days.
