The Government of Karnataka today accepted a proposal of the Odisha government to purchase power from the state-owned Gird Corporation of Odisha (GRIDCO) Limited, official sources said.

A proposal in this regard was placed before the Karnataka government when its Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee met his Odisha counterpart J K Mohapatra here.

Odisha's energy secretary O K Jena told the meeting that since the state was presently a power surplus one, it was in a position sell excess power. Mukherjee readily accepted the proposal.

"We will prefer to purchase power from the public sector undertakings of Odisha, instead of getting it from private power generating companies," Mukherjee was quoted saying in an official release.

Mohapatra asked the energy department to carry forward the proposal and have further negotiations with the authorities in Karnataka, it said.

Besides, Mukherjee praised Odisha's success in power generation, coastal zone management and preservation of eco-system, the release added.
