A local court today exempted DMK chief M Karunanidhi from appearing before it in connection with defamation cases filed against him by the Tamil Nadu government.

Principal Sessions Judge M Chockalingam accepted the request made by Karunanidhi's counsel and exempted him from appearing in person.

The court had earlier ordered summons to Karunanidhi to appear before it in connection with a defamation complaint filed against him by the Tamil Nadu Government.

The state government in its complaint had sought prosecution of Karunanidhi for alleged libellous comments about some AIADMK Ministers in his column in 'Murasoli' in the August 23, 2012 edition.

Karunanidhi had alleged family interference in clearing of files by some ministers.
