Ahead of the upcoming state assembly polls, DMK chief M Karunanidhi today claimed people of Tamil Nadu were preferring to back his party not only due to "mistakes" made by AIADMK government but also due to "Namakku Naame" campaign undertaken by his son and party treasurer M K Stalin.

Praising Stalin, the DMK patriarch said: "It will not be an exaggeration to say that the Namakku Naame campaign by Stalin has instilled confidence among various sections of people who are expressing their support and love for the party. I heartily congratulate Stalin for a successful journey," Karunanidhi said in his party organ 'Murasoli' here.

Besides, the people were preferring to back the DMK due to the "mistakes made by the AIADMK government but also due to the Namakku Naame campaign launched by Stalin," he claimed.

The 'Namakku Naame Vidiyal Meetpu Payanam' (we for ourselves, journey to retrieve dawn) was a campaign launched by Stalin last year to reach out to the people, especially youth, ahead of the coming Assembly polls. Stalin began his campaign on September 20 last from Kanyakumari district and concluded it on February 12 here after covering all the 234 assembly constituencies in the state.

"It is a successful journey that has to be etched in the history of the party. It is another milestone in the political career of Stalin," Karunanidhi observed.

In a tweet on the campaign's conclusion, Karunanidhi had greeted his son, calling him 'Thalapathi' (Commander).

Stalin is addressed as 'Thalapathi' by his followers.
