A year after the high number of infant deaths rocked Kashmir, Lalla Ded Maternity hospital, the Valley's most busy women and children hospital, has now got an intensive care unit facility for better patient care.

The three-bedded intensive care unit (ICU) unit was inaugurated by Minister for Medical Education Taj Mohi-ud-Din yesterday, an official spokesman said.

The Minister also inaugurated the extended ward of the labour room, which has added newly furbished 16 beds to the labour room of the hospital, the spokesman said.

Later, the Minister reviewed the progress of the 200-bedded extended block of the Lalla Ded hospital.

He asked the engineers to work round the clock to complete the project so that the patients get much needed relief.

The minister also reviewed the relocation plan for the shopkeepers whose shops would be relocated due to the extension of the hospital.

The state government has taken several measures since last year to improve the health care facilities for pregnant women and infants following the death of more than 500 infants at the G B Pant hospital, the Valley's only paediatric hospital.
