Kashmir police claim to have solved woman's murder

Jammu and Kashmir police today claimed to have solved a murder case of a woman who was found dead here on January 21 and arrested a youth in connection with the crime.

The body of a woman was recovered from Pokhribal area of Bota Kadal in the outskirts of Srinagar on January 21 and the preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased was murdered by someone as her body bore visible marks of violence and the ornaments she was reportedly wearing before her death were missing, a police spokesman said.

He said a murder case was registered in this connection and during investigation a number of suspected persons were called to the local policestation and questioned.
 

"During sustained questioning, 27-year-old Sheeraz Ahmad Alai of Mouchwa area of Budgam revealed that he had visited the house of the woman on January 19 and during interaction had an exchange of hot words which led to a scuffle during which he strangulated the woman and took away the jewellery she was wearing," the spokesman said.

After committing the crime, the spokesman said the youth disposed off some of the jewellery in Chadoora and proceeded to Jammu and on returning after some days, disposed off the rest of the jewellery.

"The accused got two cheques worth Rs 79,000 from the two persons as cost of the jewellery which were encashed by him. At his instance the jewellery was recovered and the accused formally arrested," the spokesman said.

The spokesman, however, did not reveal the motive behind the murder or the reason for altercation between the two but said "further investigation is in progress".
