Kashmir set to host its maiden half-marathon

Kashmir will host its maiden half-marathon on September 28, making it the first ever structured run of an international scale to be organised in the Valley.

"The race will be staged on September 28. It will be an annual event to be staged on the last Sunday of September every year. Runners from all over the world will participate in it," Hemant Dua of Inspiranti Sports, the organisers of the half-marathon, told reporters said here.

Dua said there would be three race categories - half-marathon of 21.097 km, family fun run of 7 km and kids dash of 2.5 km.
 

"We hope it will attract 5000 runners and to ensure large participation, we have announced a total prize money of Rs 2.5 lakh. Prizes will be provided in three categories - Open, Jammu and Kashmir Residents and Forces," he said.

Dua said to attract youngsters from the state, a university challenge has been instituted.

"A special scholarship is also being instituted for two talented boys and girls from the state to ensure best training, nutrition and exposure to them. Clinics will be organised in colleges and universities," he said.

He said such initiatives would help encourage a sporting culture in the region.

"We believe such events initiatives will help youth to take up sports and encourage a sporting culture in the region," he added.
