CPI today demanded that India renegotiate the agreement with Sri Lanka on Katchatheevu island so that Indian fishermen get their right to fish in the waters there.

Party MP D Raja said the government has to take up the issue with Colombo on urgent basis so that the Indian fishermen do not face problems.

He was reacting to the Centre's submission in the Madras High Court yesterday that the 1974 agreement between the two countries did not allow Indian fishermen any right to fish there but only dry their nets.

Raja wondered if fishermen have no right to fish then why will they go there to dry their nets or take rest.

He also stated that he had raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha in the past.
