Seeking to bring behavioural changes towards sanitation and hygiene through the medium of dance, a Kathak exponent has been roped in by the civic body in east Delhi to spread the message through her performances.

Nrityashri Alaknanda has been chosen as a brand ambassador by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) for its Swachh Bharat Mission, its mayor today said.

"She will spread the message of Swachh Bharat to every nick and corner of east Delhi by conducting cultural programmes every two months on the theme of sanitation," East Delhi Mayor Neema Bhagat said.

She will perform in institutions such as schools and colleges, among other places.

The dancer today met with the mayor, Municipal Commissioner Ranbir Singh, and other senior officials of the corporation.

Bhagat expressed gratitude to Nrityashri for accepting the position and said she "will not charge anything for rendering the service" for the cause.

The mayor also made an appeal to parents to teach their children about importance of cleanliness and hygiene as it can save them from many health issues.

"Sanitation is the biggest challenge in east Delhi. The objective of roping in Nrityahshri Alaknanda is to bring about behavioural changes towards sanitation and hygiene.

"The Swachh Bharat Mission has come as an opportunity to address long-pending issues related to sanitation and cleanliness in the country," Singh said.

Incidentally, the SDMC already has cricketer Gautam Gambhir and wrestling sisters Geeta and Babita Phogat of 'Dangal' fame as its sanitation brand ambassadors.

Singh also said the civic body will observe 'EDMC Day' every year on the day the corporation came into existence.

The EDMC, along with north and south corporations (NDMC, SDMC), was created in 2012 after the trifurcation of the then unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
