The Kerala government has decided to make use of pre-fabricated technology for construction purposes following consecutive floods and landslips in the State.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said the state-level empowered committee has decided to make use of the pre-fabricated technology in the houses being constructed under various projects including the Life Mission.

"We need to change the manner of rebuilding in the state. In the present construction process, we need to procure raw materials including rocks, sand and others.

So to reduce our dependency over such natural raw materials, we can make use of the new technology which can easily withstand the impact of such natural calamities," Vijayan told reporters.

He said using pre-fabricated technology, delay in construction can be avoided and huge buildings could be constructed at a faster pace.

Vijayan also said parts of houses can be made in factories and can be assembled at the site of construction.

"Initially, the new tech will only have few takers. But once people understand its advantages, they will be attracted. Using this will reduce the impact on nature by reducing the dependency on raw materials.

Such construction will be able to withstand natural calamities also," Vijayan said.

He said government has decided to study the impact of human settlements in ecologically sensitive areas in state.

It includes the study of stability of soil and other factors.

The study would include the analytics of heavy rainfall and subsequent disasters, mapping the landslide-prone areas and take steps to reduce the impact, he said.

He said a committee, headed by water resources engineer expert and Principal Secretary to the state government, K P Sudheer, will submit a report on this within three months.

The committee will also suggest measures such as effective utilisation of land to withstand the disasters.
