The Kerala government today requested the Centre to permit the mortal remains of A P J Abdul Kalam to be brought to the state to enable people to pay homage to him.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy requested that the mortal remains of Kalam be brought here on its way to Rameswaram, where the last rites are to be performed.

Chandy asked the Centre to consider the state's request favourably.

The letter was sent through Kerala House in New Delhi by around 10 am today before the Union Cabinet met, a release from Chief Minister's office said.
