Kerala Forest Department would provide six lakh saplings to be planted across the state as part of the global afforestation drive launched by the Mata Amritanandamayi Math to mark the 60th birthday celebrations of the spiritual leader, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said today.
Inaugurating the MAM initiative at the Cliff House, Chief Minister's official residence, Chandy said 1.75 lakh saplings would be handed over to the math immediately and around 50,000 would be provided every month for meeting the target by June next year.
Chandy planted at the Cliff House the first of 60 lakh saplings that the math intends to plant around the world within a year. He lauded the math for taking up a project for environment protection as part of Mata's birthday.
The afforestation campaign is among a number of initiatives of the Math as part of the 60th birthday celebrations of the spiritual leader, to be held at her ashram at Vallikkavu in Kollam district on September 27.
