With increasing incidents of road accidents involving youngsters, Kerala police has decided to take strict measures to regulate teenage riders who use motorbikes with more than 50 cc capacity.

DGP T P Senkumar in a statement directed police to impose Sections 180 and 182 of the Motor Vehicle Act on those below the age of 15 who ride motorbikes of more than 50 cc capacity.

"Motorcycles are involved in a majority of road accidents in the state. The directive is issued in the wake of increasing road mishaps involving teenagers below 18 years who ride vehicle dangerously and carelessly," he said.

Instead of levying fine, police should launch legal proceedings against owners of such vehicles under Section 180 and 181 of motor vehicle act, the official added.
