Hit by soaring oil prices, private bus owners in Kerala today decided to stop travel concession being given to students from the next academic year commencing on June 1.
The decision was taken at a coordination committee meeting of the private bus owners held here.
"The meeting has decided to stop travel concession being given to students in private buses from June 1," a private bus owner said after the meeting.
He said the concession would be extended only if the state government provided subsidy to private bus operators."""
The private bus operators claimed that the industry was running in losses due to the soaring oil prices and other operation costs.
The government early this year had increased the bus fare in view of diesel price hike.
The minimum fare for an ordinary bus service is Rs 8, up from Rs 7, and for fast passenger services, the fare is Rs 11 instead of Rs 10.
