Kerala today requested the Centre to provide more flight and train services to the state to clear the rush of passengers during the coming Onam festival season.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote to Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in this regard.

He wanted the Centre to provide 15,000 additional seats to airlines operating from the Gulf regions to destinations in Kerala between August 27 and September 15.

He pointed out that if this was done, the tendency of hiking flight charges during the rush period could be avoided.

"Now the airlines charge Rs 50,000 to Gulf countries. The present fare can be brought down to Rs 30,000 if more services are operated", Vijayan said.

In a letter to the Railway Minister, Vijayan requested an increase in the number of train services from Bangaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi to Kerala between August 27 and September 15.
