Kerala's first greenfield international stadium, suitable for both cricket and football, is fast nearing completion on the city's outskirts in Karyavattom.

The stadium, with a capacity to accommodate around one lakh spectators, has met global standards prescribed by FIFA and ICC, an official release said here today.

Spread over 37 acres, it would be the venue of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 35th edition of the National Games, to be held in the state next year.

"It becomes the first of its kind in the country being built under PPP (Private Public Participation) model in association with IL&FS, a leader in the construction industry," it said.

"The stadium is divided into four zones with the north zone kept for cricket while the east is for football. Each zone will be equipped with all high-tech facilities like players' lounge, gymnasium, media center, stock room and the south zone will house malls and food courts," the release said.

The stadium also has indoor facilities for the Games, which include two squash and volleyball courts each, besides a basketball court and a facility to play table tennis. A state-of-the-art Olympic size swimming pool is also there besides a kid's pool.

Other facilities include retail space, gymnasium, convention center, dormitories, and lighting, making it suitable for holding day and night events, it said.

The eco-friendly stadium is built on the 'green' concept with trees all around it.

"It strictly follows the National Building Norms. It has also attained the clearance certificate from the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority and the Pollution Control Board," the release added.
