Raising the issue during Zero Hour, P Rajeeve (CPI-M) said only two days back Shruthi, a bright student doing her BSc Nursing at a college in Andhra Pradesh poisoned herself after failing to secure an education loan last month. She had completed her first semester with 80 per cent marks.
Rajeeve said she had sought Rs 3 lakh loan to pursue her studies in June 2011 while her family in anticipation of grant of loan had borrowed Rs one lakh. "However, bank officials sanctioned loan after news of here suicide," he said.
He also cited another example in which a medical college student in seventh semester in Cochin had to discontinue education after being denied loan by State Bank of India.
The loan was denied under an RBI directive to banks to not to sanction loans to students admitted under management quota.
"I urge the Finance Minister (Pranab Mukherjee) to look into these matters...And ensure action against the Bank Manager in the cases," he said.
