Kerala takes up disaster mitigation steps

In a written reply, Prakesh said the plan was being put into practice in disaster prone areas between Mullaperiyar dam and downstream Idukki reservoir.

Flood mapping has been carried out from Vallakadvu to Idukki dam, Prakesh said to questions asked by members if accident prone areas had been identified and survey carried out.

On the consequences of water-level going up in the reservoir, Prakesh said IIT-Delhi after a study has come to a conclusion that the reservoir would collapse when the level reaches 160.2 feet and remained like that for 11 hours "in the event of a probable maximum flood".

 

IIT-Roorkee is in the process of completing the analysis of consequences that could happen in downstream areas of Idukki dam, he said.

Besides wanting to maintain the storage level at 136 feet, Kerala wants to built a new dam in place of the existing 116-year-old structure to which Tamil Nadu is opposed. The issue is now before the Supreme Court.
