Kerala government will organise International Skill Summit and Skill Fiesta to project the competency standards and global employability of youth in the state to the employers worldwide.

The three-day skill summit, titled 'Nypunyam 2016' and the Skill Fiesta will be jointly organised here by Directorate of Employment and Training and Kerala Academy for Skills Excellence during February 5-7.

Minister for Labour and Skills Shibu Baby John unveiled the logo, mascot and the website of the upcoming summit at a function here today.

"Kerala is known as the skill capital of the country. We have already implemented several projects, which are model for the whole country, in this area. But the realisation that we have a long way to go to compete with the global players have prompted us to come up with such an event," he said.

He said efforts are on to rope in several global companies as participants and a number of top notch firms are expected to take part in the event.

On Skill Fiesta, he said it would offer participants an opportunity to test and display their skills to a broad audience that comprises policymakers, top industrialists, key government officials and general public, he said.

"There is acute shortage of skilled people and talented hands in many hi-tech areas like mobile robotics. The event will help to take our youngsters to those fields," he said adding, that the government is planning road shows in the country and abroad to promote the event.

Principal Secretary (Department of Labour and Skills) Tom Jose said the participants of the Skill Fiesta 2016 are selected by way of a three tier process -- institutional level, zonal level and the state level.

Students and non-students under the age of 25 would be invited to compete in 12 trades including welding, plumbing, fashion technology, automobile technology, catering & restaurant service, mobile robotics, fitter, electrician, bakery and confectionery, carpentry, electronics and computer-aided design through stipulated institutions.

"The event is not to promote jobs. Our basic idea is to create awareness about jobs in the intermediate level. With right skills, the youth in the state can compete with world talents. The government is also embarking on creating a database on what the market wants in terms of jobs," he said.
