US Secretary of State John Kerry denounced today's "horrific and cowardly" attack on a nightclub in the Mali capital Bamako that left at least five people dead.

"These horrific and cowardly attacks, these acts of terrorism... An act of opening fire on a restaurant filled with innocent civilians, only strengthens our resolve to fight terrorism in all its forms wherever it lives," Kerry said.

He was speaking in Paris following a meeting with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, who said that suspects were being interrogated in Mali, without elaborating.

"We join together to express our revulsion at this kind of act," said Kerry.

"Rather than intimidate us, it has the exact opposite effect. It strengthens our partnership and it strengthens our commitment to see this moment, this generational challenge, through. And we will."

Two Europeans and three locals were shot dead in a nightclub in Bamako early today in a suspected terror attack that came as the government reached a key stage of peace talks with militants in the restive north.
