Renowned fashion designers would showcase 'Khadi' apparels at the Lakme Fashion Week starting today in Mumbai with 26 models expected to walk the ramp wearing the fabric.

Many forms of 'Khadi' will be showcased by renowned fashion designers, Chairperson, Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Vinai Kumar Saxena, said in a statement.

Lars Anderson will showcase the khadi matka fabric, Pallavi Shantam the Jamdaani fabric of Burdwan and Jewellyn Nalvares Murshidabad khadi, according to the statement.

A collection by Buna, a designer clothing firm, and Third Floor clothing by designer Saloni will also be displayed, it said.

The statement also said there will be four sequence events with one sequence of each designer and 26 models will walk the ramp wearing 'Khadi' fabric.

The four-day long fashion event, which begins today at the St Regis Hotel in central Mumbai, would display the Khadi apparels from various places including Elgandal in Telangana and Kanjarpur in Madhya Pradesh.

Saxena said 'Khadi' is a perfect example of sustainable development as it comes from humble processes of "hand cropping, hand spinning and hand weaving", which are completely sustainable because they are based on individual level competencies and skills.

"Similarly, the market process generates employment and income for the rural masses as it is not machine intensive or technology intensive. The products are completely recyclable and biodegradable," he said.

The KVIC chairperson also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for catching Khadi's latent potential.

The prime minister has often called this phase as 'Khadi for fashion' and 'Khadi for Economic Transformation', he said.
