A mahapanchayat of various Khaps (caste council) met today to press for their demands on the issue of reservation to Jats in government jobs.

The meeting, presided over by National President of Rashtriya Sarvjat Khap panchayat Nafe Singh Nain, concluded that if the Centre fails to accept their demands by December 23, Jat community members would 'gherao' the national capital in February next year.

Members of 60 khaps, including representatives from other states, attended today's Mahapanchayat held at a local Jat Dharamshala.

The Jat community has been struggling for the past one year on the issue of reservation and had organised several protest demonstrations as well, Nain said, adding the community members stand united on the issue.

"Our struggle would continue till the acceptance of our demands," Nain said.

Reservation is a must for Jats as their economic condition has deteriorated, spokesman of the Panchayat, Sube Singh Samain claimed.

Samain claimed most of the community members are dependent on agriculture for their livelihood and due to small holdings of land their income from farming has decreased.

"So they need jobs to supplement their source of income," he added.

Samain said that a 41-member committee has been constituted to appeal Jats to take part in the struggle for reservation to the members of their community.
