A tribal autonomous council of the Khasis in Meghalaya today said it strongly protested against alleged encroachment in Meghalaya's Ri Bhoi district by its tribal counterparts in Assam and the government in the neighbouring state.

"We are sending a letter of protest to the Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council seeking his cooperation in ensuring that all these encroachment activities be put to a stop immediately," Khasi Hills District Autonomous Council chief executive member (CEM), Pynshngainlang N Syiem told reporters after a meeting here.

Based on available records, he said these areas encroached by Assam government fall under the jurisdiction of the Council in Meghalaya.

Assam is alleged to have encroached into Meghalaya's jurisdiction by constructing an entrance gate and an SBI building at Sabuda village in the inter-state border and destroying a road from Jatalong to Umjaknieh constructed under MNREGA besides illegal collection in Nongtung area of the district.

The decision was taken after a meeting with the Syiem (traditional tribal chief) of Raid Nongtung and President of the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnongs (village chiefs) under Raid Nongtung based on the complaint filed by NGOs on the recent reports of Assam government's alleged encroachment in the district.
