In a move to provide relief to women travelling with their children, Kerala Human Rights Commission has asked the government to reserve seats for them in buses run by the state road transport corporation.

The rights panel has asked the government to look into the possibility of reserving some seats for women travelling with little children in KSRTC buses, KHRC sources said.

The order was issued based on a complaint filed with the

commission by a passenger who witnessed the plight of a young mother carrying an infant during a recent bus journey.

The petitioner claimed that fellow passengers, including

women, were reluctant to offer their seat to the woman and her child who were left with no option but to stand in the packed bus until he vacated his seat for them.

The plea sought KSRTC's intervention in the issue and demanded that one or two seats be reserved for mothers and infants in KSRTC and private-run buses.

The order, issued by the Commission, was handed over to

the state Transport Secretary and Commissioner recently, the sources said.
